Keynote: Vazaskia Crockrell, Director for the Office of Juvenile Justice
“We envision a nation where all of our children are healthy, educated and free from violence. Should they come in contact with the juvenile justice system, we want the experience to be rare, fair and beneficial to them.” Guided by this visionary statement of the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, the Washington State Smart on Juvenile Justice reform effort aimed at developing a statewide strategic plan focused on reforms that will reduce the number of youth, particularly youth of color, who enter the Washington juvenile justice system for status and low-level offenses. Essential to our work is to leverage existing efforts, sustain multi-systems coordination, and cultivate community engagement. Ms. Vazaskia Crockrell will address the planning process and share key elements of stakeholder partnership and critical community engagement which we believe will help take the reform strategies deep into the community where those who have the most at stake and the most to gain can make them their own.
